“The Yellow Wallpaper” Analysis
The “Yellow Wall Paper” is a beautifully well- crafted manuscript published in the 1892 by a brilliant writer called Charlotte Perkins Gilma. It captures all the eccentrics of it era. This book puts forth a lot of valid points that can be argued, but for fulfilling my requirements, I will focus on sharing light on how women were disparaged from their male counter parts.
It was not long into the story before the husband started to display the norm of the time. He showed that women ideas and decision was not being considered in decision making. The main character starts off by saying that she is sick, but her husband does not believe it. It seems it does not matter even if she knows she feels sick. If
her husband does not approve it, then it is not real (Gilma 2). She made another reference to this when she stated, “John does not know how much I suffer, he knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him”. This statement speaks volume. She is referring to her husband whom is supposed to be her partner, her comforter, someone she can confide in. For her to say even him does not knows how much she suffers just shows the lack of empathy and understanding of women. She adds that he knows there is no reason to suffer. This is to say everything is provide for you. So, from now on all you should do is smile and entertain me and my guests. In this story the main character often struggles with the fact that she knows something is wrong and have some idea of how she wants to be treated but her husband is completely dismissive of any input she tries to suggest.
At one point she suggested that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. He refuses that idea and suggested that she just lay down and let him do everything and make all the decisions for her care as though he knows better than she does. She then struggles with the idea of writing to ease her mind from all the depression and torture she felt she was going through. It is like being taken against your will to an isolated place with images driving you insane. The sad thing is she cannot do anything about it but to continue to live in misery. The norms...
