She kept a diary of her life while living in the "Secret Annex". It was actually an abandoned area of the office building where her father worked. At seven thirty the nest morning they left in the pouring rain with their school satchels filled with clothes and schoolbooks. All that day without making a noise they fixed the attic up so that the room was "one giant picture" as she wrote.The next week the Van Daan's joind them with their fifteen-year-old son Peter and his cat Mouschi. Anne could tell she didn't like Mrs. Van Daan by the way she always talked about her belongings that were the "best that money could buy". She wasn't sure about Peter though, he seemed to be shy and abnormal.After they had been in hiding for nearly three months they decided to take in an eighth person. On November 17th, Mr. Dussel, a dentist, moved in to the "Secret Annex". He drove Anne crazy because he would get up early in the mornings and make tons of racket, so Ann plotted daily on how she would get back at him. Every day, Meip would bring books, food, ans clothes to them. On Cundays, they went down to the private office to listen to the radio, though Anne was always worried that someone would hear them. After they had been in hiding for nearly a year Anne celebrated her 14th birthday. She recalled it as being the strangest birthday of her life. Finally, after nearly a year and a half Peter became more talkative, and he and Anne became friends.Anne's diary ends on August 4, 1944. All of the occupants of the "Secret Annex" including Mr. Koophuis were arrested and sent ot German and Dutch concentration camps. Of the nine arrested only Anne's father returned. Anne died March in March of 1945, two months before the liberation of Holland.
