In today's humanity there are countless prejudices that occur. They vary from racial, and gender prejudices to sexual preference and religious discrimination. I have chosen to explore the statistics of people who are homosexual and if it should be morally accepted in a Christian society. I am not really positive on how I stand on this subject because I am a religious person, and my church has stated that, "all who seek to live faithfully regardless of ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, or social circumstances are welcome to full participation in the life of the congregation." Even with my church being open with this issue, I still am not sure how I feel on the matt ...view middle of the document...
These beliefs shut out any chance that a homosexual Christian will be accepted into a church of their choice. There are many churches around the nation that have shut out the opportunity that a homosexual has to express their faith and sexual preference. Because of this, many homosexuals that are members of a "homophobic" congregation will remain in their "religious closet" and keep their ways of behaving to themselves. (http://hcqsa.virtualave.net/#toc)According to an online question and answer website provided by C. Ann Shepard, it is estimated that "ten percent of the total population is homosexual." Out of this ten percent about six percent are said to be practicing some sort of religion. Through my research I have found that many websites that I visited believe that homosexuals should be accepted into a Christian society, and the Bible verses that express disapproval are outdated and do not go along with today's society. An article that I came across, written by Becky Shelton states that, "the bible does not say that homosexuality is even a sin. You can't count what God says in Leviticus because that is outdated. We don't follow hardly any of the other rules given in there so why do people make a big deal out of that one. Besides, all the bible passages against it are used out of context. Most of them are talking about temple prostitutes and how that is wrong." This was interesting to me because of how persistent a conservative Christian feels about how the above bible verses condemn homosexuality. I found another website from a liberal Christian that says, "for most liberal Christians, the issue of homosexuality seems equally obvious - we are called by God to treat others with justice and without condemning; hence, the only legitimate Christian response is to welcome and affirm those in a homosexual life-style - not to do so is intolerant and bigoted." The churches that choose to have an open membership for all those that want to worship, including the homosexual population, is taking a big step forward in today's society. Various individuals believe that, yes homosexuality is a sin, but Christians that sin, do have the opportunity for repentance. So in many people's minds they will be forgiven for their sin because of their promise of eternal life in heaven no matter the lifestyle that a person chooses as long as they believe in God. Homosexuals believe that they have the same rights as heterosexuals. In this country we have the right to practice the faith of our choice without apprehension of discrimination. Also as Americans, we have the obligation to insure that one perso...
