Does Healthy Eating Effect Lifestyle?
Healthy eating should become a part of your life instead of a diet because dieting causes you to limit your food intake and you may be limiting yourself to nutrients that are needed in the body and necessary for strength and maintenance of a healthy body. Making your eating a part of your lifestyle instead of restricting yourself of food will cause you to want food more and depending what is available, depends on what you will eat when you are hungry or starving. For instance, the saying goes, “you are what you eat,” meaning if you eat sugars, starches, fatty foods, you will become sluggish and tired without energy and you then start getting diseases from eating too much sugars or not enough water intake. Many people suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure due to poor diet. “Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods that give you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feel good, and have energy. These nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins and minerals.” (breatcancer.org)
To perform its necessary functions the body needs the nutrients in food that enables the cells in our bodies. “Nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that are essential for the growth, development and maintenance of body functions. Essential meaning that if a nutrient is not present, aspects of function and therefore human health decline. When nutrient intake does not regularly meet the nutrient needs dictated by the cell activity, the metabolic processes slow down or even stop.” (umn.edu) The United States is facing significant health problems which ranks ninth place in life expectancy in the world. Researcher believe these problems are related to the foods we intake. Researchers use to believe that certain diseases were caused by single gene mutation but now they are blaming these conditions on a dysfunction which is biological and the food that is eaten plays an important role to that biological dysfunction that lacks the balance nutrients. When practitioners, that specialize in functional medicine examine the roles of multiple systems which is the role of nutrition in the chronic diseases they see the interconnections between those systems such as the immune system, the digestive system, and the detoxification system. Declining health in one or more body systems is what proceeded after chronic disease which practitioners seek to identify the underlying dysfunction at an early stage to prevent a possible disease. Providing foods and nutrients needed to restore function is one of the ways Functional Medicine looks to address health that is declining.
