Introductory Awareness of Sensory Loss.

When a person is experiencing sensory loss, there are positive and negative factors that impact on this individual, one positive point is that in most cases when an individual loses there sight for example, there other senses such as smell, hearing, touch and taste are heightened another positive point is there is a lot of help for people out there experiencing these problems. But there are also many negative points, when an individuals sight is impaired they may need to completely alter the way in which they live for example if the individuals sight is completely gone then they may need to learn Braille, This is a way in which people who have no sight can still read and write using a pointed stylus to push dots into paper. An individual then who is familiar with Braille can then feel the dots on the paper and understand what is being communicated, So for instance if a blind person walked into a restaurant and wanted to order a meal they could request for a Braille menu, they could then feel the dots on this menu and be able to understand what is written and order there desired dish.
Another negative point is that deafness and blindness can effect the way in which we learn especially at a young age, when you are a baby or child you watch and listen to people, this is how we learn how to talk and do things but if your ability to do this is impaired , it becomes increasingly difficult to learn and develop when growing up.
Also being visually impaired can have a huge impact on your social and work life, for instance someone who is visually impaired would not be able to do activities such as cinema trips. Also they would be unable to work in a kitchen due to the need for colour coding for chopping boards, cloths etc. another factor which can affect your life is the loss of smell
Your sense of smell often acts as a first warning weather it be for a gas leak or if there was a fire but if your sense of smell is impaired it can then affect your safety because there is no indication to you that you are in any danger. It can also affect your personal life, if you have lost your sense of smell and you are planning a physical activity with friends you are unaware of the body odour you may be producing, this might affect your friends or other people socializing with you, and you would be completely unaware that this is the reason people are avoiding you, this can also cause people to isolate themselves as they are often unaware of the reason people may be avoiding them.

There are many negative factors when discussing sensory loss, but there are also a lot of ways and help for people to overcome these factors. for example if you have lost your sight, one way in which may help you to adapt to everyday life may be to make your home clear of obstacles making it easier for you to navigate. Also as mentioned earlier there is the use of Braille in which a blind person can read and write
