Readings: David Cole’s Five Myths About Immigration, textbook pg. 557-560 .
Assignment: Write a summary-response essay, based on your choice of reading from the list above.
In a summary/response paper, writers respond to one or more texts they have read. Writing good response papers is more demanding than it might appear at first. It is not simply a matter of reading the text, understanding it, and expressing an opinion about it. In other words, summary/response papers require you to synthesize and report the intellectual work of others—that is, bring it together into an integrated whole. In preparing to write summary/response papers, therefore, it is crucial that you allow yourself not just enough time to do the readings but enough to digest what you have read and to put the results together into a unified account.
You will draw from your analysis by asking and answering the questions below. You will use your summary skills to articulate the various answers to the questions in multi-paragraph format (remember: construct one topic sentence per paragraph). When crafting your response, you will write about your reactions to the reading, making sure to support your response with your personal experiences, your unique background, and/or your core beliefs.
