Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Their strengths and weaknesses defines who they are as a person. In the short story, The Blind Man, by D. H. Lawrence shows this. The Blind Man is about a man named Maurice Pervin who lost his vision during WWI and and has to cope with his vision loss throughout the rest of his life. His wife, Isabel, feels sorrowful and cannot bear looking at him. Bertie, a good friend of Isabel and who Maurice does not like, comes from Scotland to the Grange, where Maurice and Isabel live. Bertie and Isabel talk about what they have been up to since they haven't seen each other for two years. In the story "The Blind Man:, Lawrence is able to show that with every weakness in a person, there is a strength through the comparison of Maurice's and isabel's view of darkness, contrast between Maurice and Bertie, and description of Isabel's insight of other people's feelings in certain situations.

It was a pleasure to him to rock thus though a world of things, carried on the flood in a sort of blood-prescience." This correlates to his "curious tentative movement of his powerful, muscular legs". The author makes an analogy of great strength to better adaptation of things. For Maurice's wife, the darkness was freighting while to Maurice, it is just a part of his life. Maurice's wife is always worried about Maurice with such a disability.
