What is going on with Pligg? Alternatives?

By sdinesh - Aug. 22, 2007

So, there are several articles around the web talking about Pligg putting itself up for sale. In the past several months, they have cleaned up their site and have been getting some buzz. Any other insights? Does anyone know if anyone is biting? What alternatives do we have to Pligg for a good web 2.0 platform for community content?

VideoSift, a large user of Pligg has decided to walk away from Pligg and use another alternative that they have developed. They will be using this starting Aug 25, it seems. VideoSift has over 1 million unique users and claims that they are the largest user of Pligg. Since Pligg is Open Source, they are probably still using a fair amount of the guts, but guess they did not want to stick around with unclear access to the code. The interesting thing is going to be seeing what the 'new owners' will do. This may be one way for Open Source software to make real money- get a few solid customers and then try to sell the whole shoot n match.

If you want something more comprehensive, you can go for a full-blown offering from Content Management systems like Drupal, Mambo or Joomla. Most of those will have content rating capabilities, so you might want to take a look at those too. So, as far as alternatives go, you can use any one of those. Run a search for open source content management systems and you will see some alternatives there.
