iPhone unlocked for real?

By a.medlin - Aug. 24, 2007

WOW! WOW! The iPhone claims to have been unlocked from AT&T and is currently being used on T-Mobile. It is claimed that T-Mobile is the only other compatible network! Has anyone tried this? Any more news on this? I saw this on CNN, where the article claims that George Hotz (on the edge of seventeen!) actually unlocked this puppy! Details to follow, but it seems like a fairly complex process. He collaborated online with people from Russia to get this done. Wonder if this was that paid ihackiphone project.

This definitely seems interesting. However, there seems to be a fair amount of hardware work to get this to actually work! Not sure if I am up for it. Like the article said, though, let's hope vendors start doing this themselves and start selling the 'unlocked' phones. With a voided warranty..... Interesting.....

Here's a more detailed article on this. It talks about other efforts which can unlock the device. However, those have not been proven yet. The interesting news is that there seems to be talk about software updates. The other interesting part is the legality of the entire situation is in question. It seems that people are not necessarily legally allowed to profit from 'hacking' the phone. WTF? The article http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/IPHONE_UNLOCKED seemed to indicate that the hackers have been approached by AT&T's legal team already! Watch this space, folks!

Doesn't matter if you're not up for it - 400,000 people in China are up for it and that's more than 10% of Apple's iPhone sales since inception! :)

I don't think its going to be as easy for Mr. Jobs getting the operators on board (on his terms) in China as it was with AT&T in the US.

I have a solution for anyone who has an iPhone, but does not like AT&T!!! I found a software that will unlock your iPhone so you can use it on ANY network!! Works for versions 1.1.1 -1.1.4

Will not work on 3G though!!
