Will Yahoo buy OpenOffice next?

By mulli_j - Sep. 19, 2007

Now that it has mail and PIM collaboration done with Zimbra, do we see Yahoo buying OpenOffice next? Even with a beefier Mail client, Yahoo still lags Google in the apps space. While this move takes yahoo ahead of Hotmail, it still needs to catch up to Google on the apps sharing side. It will make a good addition to the 'Yahoo Business' platform, though.

Well, if they can build a slick web-based version of the tools, they may strongly look at it. As of now, they only have some basic collaboration features for 'business' users. Their calendaring offering improves with Zimbra, but they really have no shared document/spreadsheet/presentation capabilities. They already have web-based IM capabilities through their web-based IM (Yahoo messenger web), but not much else. As Google comes out with their own product, this might actually be good news for ONE other company in that space that Yahoo might pick up!

Don't think Yahoo is going to be doing too much "buying" going forward :)
