The Free Open Source Software Mac User Group has been around since mid-2004 but is beginning to gain greater traction as more Mac users look for open source alternatives to Apple's sometimes pricey commercial apps.
Be aware, though, that user groups are a two-way street. As you become more proficient at adapting open source software for your Mac, be sure to offer advice to the groups newcomers and help out any way you can.
FreeSMUG's Web site offers several tutorials on a varity of open source apps, including The GIMP, Open Office, and Handbrake. There's also a giant directory of open source software apps, and a forum where you can ask questions and connect with other members.
Is it worth it to join a user group aimed at open source Mac users? Well, that depends. When you're new to the world of free software, there's a lot you can learn from users who've already walked the path you're on. Group members can help steer you toward proven apps that will meet your needs and away from ones that, for example, won't work on your particular version of OS X.
Whether you join FreeSMUG or want to just lurk for a while, it's good to know there's a place where Mac users that love open source can go to get their questions answered and meet other like-minded folks.
