Following in the footsteps of Facebook, which opened up its social network to developers about a year ago, MySpace is now launching its own developer platform (in a beta version), and it already features an application gallery for users. This can't really be described as a huge open source event--it's more akin to MySpace widgetizing--but it is built on open protocols and is already leading to freely available new applications. It's not an Open Source event, and developers that extend the MySpace platform should know and understand that there work will only make one companies stock and value rise, and that company is Myspace.
I agree that it's not a pure open source event, but it will lead to a lot of free applications and hopefully more open APIs and protocols. There are already a lot of free apps available as a result of this move.
