I'm looking at awstats data and am a little confused on the difference between hits, visits and views. I get the unique visitor stat but the for example my site had 1k visits, 4k Pages, 20k hits???

Look at the glossary http://awstats.sourceforge.net/docs/awstats_glossary.html

Someone comes to your site. This is 1 visit.
In the process, I request 4 html files, 6 jpegs and 2 css templates.
That will be counted as 4 + 6 + 2 = 12 hits
Within the next 24 hours, the same person visits your site again, from the same IP address,
and request 15 files this time.
So, that's a total of :
1 Unique Visitor, 2 Visits, and 27 Hits.
Hope that helps...
