Has anyone bought/used a Chumby??

By donchase - Apr. 01, 2008

I just saw the blog post about Chumby raising 12.5 million dollars! Have to admit, I hadn't heard of Chumby until now, but I went checked it out and can't imagine anyone wanting to pay $179.95 for this - get a smart phone for the same amount and it does everything the Chumby does (incl. the alarm!) + lets you text, make phone calls, sync your calendar, etc. etc. etc.

So, my question is - WHY??

I agree. Buy an alarm clock at Target for 9.95 and use your pc for everything else!

What is grandma going to use when you want to add a feed for your kids' photos? Grandma cannot fight the BSOD. Grandma don't do Flickr.

The point my friend is one should not be tethered to a computer merely to have a feed to photos or a newsfeed. The benefit to the not-so-technical is HUGE as the vast majority of people are in this category. I buy one of these for mom or grandma, set it to a flickr account and voila! she is surprised with new photos. no computer, no complexity, just simple interface to information that is meaningful to me. Not to mention there is an API so the chumby really can be used as a prototype platform. Make your own tool, make one for grandma!
