OpenSimulator is an open source server for hosting virtual worlds similar to Second Life. OpenSimulator uses libsecondlife to handle communication between the client and server, so it is possible to connect to an OpenSim server using the Linden Lab Second Life client.
It can be used to create a Second Life like environment that can be run as a standalone instance, or connect with other OpenSimulator instances. It can also be used to create other 3d interactive or collaborative environments.

Second life has users and better tools to "build" stuff and the experience is just a LOT slicker - so I'm not too sure how this is going to work out longer term but there seem to be a fair number of users getting involved. That coupled with profile (avatar) portability - it might give SL a run for its money...
