Essential Firefox Extensions for Version 3 Tinkerers

Written by Sam Dean - Jul. 02, 2008

Now that the new version of Mozilla's Firefox browser is out, many of us are still busy customizing it with favorite extensions, and more. Slowly but surely, I've been able to get my favorite extensions working as I want them to, including the libraries of information that some of them are designed to manage. I continue to find updates to many extensions for the new Firefox, and I notice that others around the web are doing so as well. Here are some top recommendations.

I'm pleased to see that one of my very favorite Firefox extensions, iMacros, has been updated to work with Firefox 3. This extension can save you tons of time if you perform a lot of repetitive tasks while online. It lets you record, name and replay sets of tasks, and you can keep your collection of recorded macros available right on Firefox's toolbar.

Webworkerdaily is recommending the new beta of version 2.0 of PDF Download.   This extension sits in the background, and when you click a PDF link, you can choose to view a document in your browser, in an exsternal viewer, or view as HTML.

Webware has a good review up of Pluribo, a Firefox extension that goes through large collections of reviews on Amazon and produces easy-to-scan summaries. I've just tried it, and it looks like a keeper. As Webware notes, it would be very interesting to see a similar extension for sifting through and summarizing online news.

Finally, while it isn't a Firefox extension, it's worth looking into Webworkerdaily's discussion of an update to Weave, which is Mozilla's platform for integrating online services with Firefox. It can move a Firefox user profile into the cloud.
