Adium is a popular free software instant messaging client for Mac OS X that supports multiple protocols through the libezv (for Bonjour) and the libpurple (all other protocols) libraries. It is written using Mac OS X's Cocoa API, and it is released under the GNU General Public License, and many other licenses for components that are distributed with Adium.
Many of the program's essential features are actually provided by plugins. The newest version includes support for file transfer, support for the Growl notifications system, Sparkle for program updates and support for encrypted messaging with the Off-the-Record Messaging library. Adium 0.88 was the first version compiled as a universal binary, allowing it to run natively on Intel-based Macs.
Adium is also highly customizable through the use of resources its developers call "Xtras". The program can be customized by the use of hundreds of third-party Xtras that alter the appearance of emoticons, Dock icons, contact list styles, and messages styles. Adium can also be enhanced through the use of different sound sets. AppleScripts can also be utilized to automatically alter behavior in responses to certain triggers. [edit]

Its very easy to install and use and it also works with almost all the protocols out there (ICQ, .Mac, Jabber, Yahoo, MSN, etc. etc.).
Overall, Adium is a good multi-protocol IM app and - its complex, yet user friendly and easy to use and any non-techie could simply download and start using this.
Pros: Very easy to customize without any complicated coding requirements. It has all the functionality you want in an IM aggregator and its stupidly simple to use.
Cons: It can be slow at times and sometimes (rarely) it crashes but restarting takes care of that.
Adium is good - probably the best IM aggregator for the Mac. You can download GAIM if you use windows. Adium is esentialy built on top of GAIM.
Extremely customizable, great interace, very seldom does it fail to work, multiple chat clients in one (Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber..) I recommend this to anyone on a Mac.
Trillian is bloated as hell and Adium is great!
For windows i'd rather go with gaim - Trillian is an awful and bloated program.
you can't paste images directly into the chat window as you can with iChat. Other than that, great product with Mac beauty interface.
Adium allows me to keep in contact with friends and family members around the world on different IM services. It's very easy on the eyes, highly customisable and works like a dream on my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.2.
I use Miranda (www.miranda-im.org) on Windows. Miranda is also nice, you can customise it and it connects to a large variety of different IM services.
These guys jsut rock the IM boat. Adium is by far the greatest app for IM on a Mac.
