TrueCrypt is a software application used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE). It can create a file-hosted container or write a partition which consists of an encrypted volume with its own file system, contained within a regular file, which can then be mounted as if it were a real disk. TrueCrypt also supports device-hosted volumes, which can be created on either an individual partition or an entire disk. With version 5.0 it can encrypt the windows boot partition.TrueCrypt is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It is distributed under a collection of licences, including the TrueCrypt License, which is judged by Debian to be a free software licence.
Only July 5, 2008, TrueCrypt released version 6.0. In the new version, TrueCrypt now performs parallel encryption and decryption operations on multi-core systems, giving the user significant speedup if you have more than one processor available. In addition, it now has the ability to hide an entire operating system, so even if the user is forced to reveal the pre-boot password to an adversary, the user can give them one that boots into a plausible decoy operating system, with the actual hidden operating system remaining completely undetectable.

TrueCrypt is super useful, a free open-source alternative to solutions like DriveCrypt. Its great to keep your SSH private keys in an encrypted volume on a thumb drive. TrueCrypt is perfect for this.
You can use this to encrypt and lock a single file or entire folders. Great little utility esp. if you have others using your computer from time to time.
"There is also a version of Truecrypt for Linux. A Truecyrpt encrypted volume on a USB stick, for example, can be mounted under either operating system, enabling files to be securely shuttled between the two." As left on my post about TrueCrypt.
Makes it also very versatile and secure for your data to travel with.

Be sure to use the tutorial and DON'T create a file on a compressed drive.
Very powerful app and Awesome security. Best part is that most of the default settings will fulfill just about any security need out there.
It used to be that you needed admin rights to encrypt/decrypt, and this was problematic on public computers where you might want to use an encrypted USB.
I used Cryptainer LE, which is good but there is a 25 Mb limit on encrypted containers. Switching to Truecrypt was a no-brainer. There is no limit to container sizes, and it's super easy to use. I use TrueCrypt to secure all my client data on my laptop and to secure data on a USB drive. If you are looking for an excellent and free (and probably the best) way to secure your data - truecrypt it is!
