Europeans are very thorough - esp. the Germans - evident from the cars they build! :) Typo3 is, similarly, a very popular thorough and powerful CMS app, but is also rather complicated. The good news is that it there are huge number of extensions to add functionality to the already rich out-of-the-box system.
You can build almost any type of website based on Typo3, including community portals, e-commerce destinations, media sites, image galleries, blogs, etc.
The downside - its complex structure, feature richness and long history makes it hard to understand at times. Once it is fully tested on the PHP framework - this will definitely be the reference industrial-strength OSS CMS package - although others like Drupal, Joomla have raised funds and are beefing up their offerings pretty quickly as well...
