The Google interface is tremendous and the ability to slice and dice data is unmatched. AWStats is probably the most accurate representation of your traffic but pulling data around specific time periods, drilling down on specific content and sources is just much harder than it is in Google.

I would recommend using this to get your aggregate data and do all your analysis on Google - even if it is 5-10% off...

I've been using this package for a while, and have been very impressed. It handles log files well (can handle different apache formattings pretty well), and extracts rich information. I use this package in conjunction with a client-side package - Google Analytics. I didn't like AWstat's client-side javascript as much. Google Analytics collects rich information from the client, but not the server (e.g. Bot traffic).

All in all - two thumbs up!

I have evaluated several web analytics tools and I keep going back to awstats. Every new tool that comes out has something gimmicky (e.g. crazy egg has the heat map) but nothing has ever been able to give me a comprehensive data set like awstats.

The presentation is not as desirable as google analytics but who cares, you're not sleeping with the data. The big thing that I haven't been able to find on other tools is the analysis by time of day which can be critical as you look to do trend analysis.

Use all the other fancy tools out there, but ONLY in conjunction with Awstats
