2012 Gentoo Screenshot Contest is On

by Ostatic Staff - Jul. 09, 2012

Every year members of the Gentoo project hold their annual Gentoo screenshot contest, and it's that time of year again right now. And just as the name implies, it is indeed a contest for the prettiest, coolest, or whatever-vague-criteria-is-used-but-isn't-published-anywhere Gentoo desktop setup. All you need is a Gentoo install and an Internet connection to win.

According to information posted on gentoo.org, developers, users, or staff may enter up to three screenshots. Five judges, consisting of two Gentoo developers and three users, will decide the top five screenshots entered. The winners' desktops will be immortalized on the official Gentoo Website. The only official rules are that the screenshots must be in Portable Network Graphics format, released under share alike license, and include the output from emerge --info |head -n 1 in the screenshot. Everything else is up to you.

One of last year's winners is this minimal Compiz desktop by whtwtr. As you can see by it, past winners, and even in this year's entries, minimalization is highly respected; after all Gentoo users save resources for compiling.

More information can be found on the Gentoo forums or just enter here. Deadline to enter is August 31, 2012. Winners to be announced September 10, 2012.
