5 Firefox Add-Ons to Make Browsing Easier

by Ostatic Staff - Jan. 20, 2010

Just when you think you've got all the Firefox add-ons you'll ever need, the developer community is busy dreaming up more. Here's five add-ons you'll love that also might solve some problems you didn't even know you had.

TinEye Reverse Image Search - The next time you come across an image on the Internet and wonder where it originates, TinEye can help you track it down. If you've got this add on installed, all you need to do is right-click the image, select "Search Image on TinEye," and wait for the results. It tells you where an image is being used on the Web and can even search photos that have been edited, cropped, resized, and even find ones of higher resolution than the one you're viewing.

Cool Previews - Ever click on a link while browsing only to find the new web page was nothing like you expected? Aside from being a waste of time, some links can take you to truly horrifying places (Rickroll, anyone?) Use Cool Previews to preview links in neat 3D windows before you click so you can avoid nasty surprises. This slick little add-on also lets users control how quickly a preview window opens, and works with images and videos, too. If you like what you see, you can temporarily bookmark items to revisit later.

Multiple Tab Handler - Tabbed browsing in Firefox is fantastic. Closing a bunch of tabs one at a time -- not so much. Multiple Tab Handler makes quick work of shutting down or reloading a batch of tabs all at once. It's perfect for those browsing sessions where you've opened a dozen tabs while researching something and now you're ready to ditch them all. Simply click and drag your mouse across the tabs you want to close. When you release the mouse button, a pop-up box lets you choose your next action: close or reload. Multiple Tab Handler has a bunch of nifty additional features, making it a great multi-tasking add-on.

is.gd Creator - There are plenty of good URL shortening services out there but we love the is.gd add-on for how easy it is to use. To shorten a URL, just click on Tools -> Create is.d URL For This Page, and that's it. The add-on saves the new URL to your clipboard for easy pasting into an email or Twitter status update box.

Only PDF

- When you're searching Google, sometimes the best results are hiding in PDFs. If you're looking for a way to easily search only PDFs instead of every possible result Google spits back, then this add-on is for you. Unlike other add-ons that have extra features and do double duty, Only PDF does only one thing -- but it does it well.
