Linus Wins Award, Tails 1.0, and Ubuntu Warning

Linus Torvalds is back in the news, but this time it's good. Torvalds tops the news tonight for being the recipient of a prestigious award. LibreOffice 4.1.6 was released today with about 90 fixes and squeezably fresh Tails 1.0 is making headlines. And our final story tonight, The Register is reporting that upgrading Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 "may knacker your Linux PC."

Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, was named recipient of the 2014 IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award last week. The award was established in 1981 to:

Honor the vision of those whose efforts resulted in the creation and continued vitality of the computer industry. The award is presented to outstanding individuals whose main contribution to the concepts and development of the computer field was made at least 15 years earlier.

LibreOffice 4.1.6 was released today for users of the 4.1 family of the popular office suite. One changelog lists 80 fixes. Some of them sound like they were quite annoying such as several weird crashes and freezes, import and export issues, and image viewing errors. Get yours here.

The Register is reporting that upgrading your Ubuntu 13.03 computer could render it inoperable. Canonical apparently knows about this issue and basically says folks can just restore their bootloader to get back in. Canonical told The Reg that only a few "power users" are experiencing issues, so no biggie.
