Lifehacker is out with its Lifehacker Pack 2009, a list of top free application downloads. The list includes both open source and freeware applications. We've covered a number of the titles that were chosen as favorites. Here are four of the open source applications from the list, and one freeware app, to make sure and try if you haven't already.
The folks at Lifehacker give a nod to VLC Media Player, and we like it too. It's a cross-platform, lightweight player that supports nearly every significant video and audio format.
Notepad++ is a replacement for Windows Notepad that is much more flexible. It's not a full-blown word processor, but supports full drag 'n' drop, zooming, WYSIWYG text, and more--all in a lightweight package that you can get in and out of faster than you can in word processors.
Pidgin is an open source, multi-protocol instant messaging application. As we covered here, it has a whole lot of useful plug-ins that make it more useful. It's also customizable in useful ways. For example, you can use it to flag newly arrived e-mails.
As I covered here, Teracopy is a much better solution than Windows Explorer for Windows users who want to copy files back and forth between folders and destinations. It's rocket fast, and a time-saver. Teracopy is freeware rather than open source--very good at the one thing it focuses on.
Even if you already use iTunes, give Songbird a try. It's a favorite music management application among authors at OStatic. There are tons of slick, community-driven plug-ins for it, and more.
