by Ostatic Staff - Feb. 24, 2012

Very few in Linuxland haven't heard of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, one of the scariest video games every built. It scored high on many lists of favorite games in large part because this independent gaming house chose to release their high quality games for Linux as well as the more lucrative Windows market. Well, these talented young developers are now planning a sequel of sorts.

Joystiq.com has been following all the developments and even scored exclusive interviews with key participants. Xav de Matos describes the excitement in Thomas Grip's voice as his team can talk about the upcoming Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

It is being reported that Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs isn't a direct sequel or continuation of the characters and situation from The Dark Descent, but does retain the atmosphere (game engine, setting, textures, etc.). Little beyond "the set" and purpose is being recycled. Pigs will have new characters, new time frame, and new types of adventures. Although specifics are scarce right now, Grip says many elements from Descent have been replace with new ones for Pig. For example, it will remain a first-person horror journey, but Matos and Grip "agree the game has a high bar to aspire to."

Dan Pinchbeck, writer for thechineseroom and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, is quoted by Joystiq.com as saying, "We tried looking at protecting the sense of it being an Amnesia game and really belonging to the design template that was set up [by the original]. But it's doing quite a few things that mean players won't be able to play it like Amnesia [The Dark Descent]."

The Machine for Pigs Website explains the premise as, "The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus has returned home from a disastrous expedition to Mexico, which has ended in tragedy. Wracked by fever, haunted by dreams of a dark machine, he recovers consciousness in his own bed, with no idea of how much time has passed since his last memory. As he struggles to his feet, somewhere beneath him, a engine splutters, coughs, roars into life..."
