Even though Web-based email in enterprise is touted as the next best thing since sliced bread, it's definitely not right for all companies. There's an inherent risk in moving all your email to the cloud -- data loss and security issues rank at the top of the list -- so many businesses tend to stick with expensive commercial email management software like Microsoft Exchange.

Unfortunately, the interface of Web-based email tends to have a certain charm that's hard to overlook. Threaded conversations, advanced search options, and all sorts of other things make services like Gmail seem very attractive.

Linux-based email management hardware appliance and software vendor AtMail released a new version of its flagship product, AtMail 6.0, that aims to blend the best features of Web mail with the security of in-house email.

AtMail's server components rely on open source software like Clam AV and Spam Assassin. It's built with AJAX on a Zend framework and has complete CalDAV, SQL, and LDAP support. AtMail 6.0 sports several new user interface features, including tabbed browsing, optional threaded conversations, two- or three-pane email views, and integrated address and calendaring that includes Vcard support.

AtMail CTO Jason Brown told OStatic, "The old version [of AtMail] was a bit dated so we've taken our simple interface and provided a more modern one for our users. We re-worked it from the ground, up."

Brown says the move to overhaul AtMail was also prompted by a shift in what businesses are looking for in enterprise software. "We're seeing a lot of people move to open standards and protocols, and getting away from costly commercial products like Microsoft or Novell."

AtMail 6.0 is available at different price points according to level of support and number of users. To get a hands-on look at the product, take it for a test drive using the live demo on the company's Web site.
