Recently, Lisa covered the click2try site, which is a good way to try open source software in a virtual environment without any downloading or installation required. The site provides several categories of software to choose from, ranging from business to education to productivity apps. There are also three Linux operating systems available: Ubuntu, openSUSE, and CentOS.
Today, Click2Try has announced its Virtual Launch program, which takes some of the application launching functionality from click2try and allows any web site or blog owner to incorporate it on his or her site. If you want site visitors to try one of the open source applications that click2try includes, this is one of the fastest ways to let them do so.
At the click2try Virtual Launch page, you can choose from a list of hosted applications. The page generates the code to display a button which, when copied to your website or blog, lets a site visitor launch a preconfigured application virtual machine. The virtual machine hosting the application is delivered from the secure click2try data center in Houston, Texas. However, users of the application at your site, simply see it launch with intermediary steps transparent to them.
Click2try has over 50 applications and platforms available to try currently, ranging from content management systems, to CRM products, to office applications, to Linux. The success of the Virtual Launch program will no doubt depend on whether the site can offer a larger collection of apps to try. Still, I've been using Click2try, and it is indeed a very fast way to jump in and get the feel of an unfamiliar software environment.
If you haven't tried Click2try yet, you need an updated version of Java 1.6 to work with it, and either Firefox or Internet Explorer. Instructions for putting the click2try button on your blog or site are here.Â
