Cloudera's New Director Release Focuses on Simplifying Hadoop for Enterprises

by Ostatic Staff - Jan. 26, 2016

Cloudera has been focused on simplifying deployment and adoption of Hadoop for years now, and now it is out with its latest version of Cloudera Director 2.0, which it bills as "the easiest way to deploy and manage enterprise Hadoop in cloud environments."

Director 2.0 offers new automated tools to reduce operating costs, deliver critical enterprise-grade capabilities, and provide troubleshooting necessary for production. Cloudera also claims that customers can take advantage of customized configurations to quickly get started with common workloads.

Streaming data and the Internet of Things are two of 2016's trends that several companies are focused on because they are producing huge flows of data that will require next-generation analytics. With those trends in mind, Cloudera Director is targeted to support hybrid operations, new optimizations in the platform to seamlessly integrate with object stores, and integrations and partnerships with the major cloud environments -- Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure.

“Across all industries and use cases, our customers are interested in running Hadoop in cloud environments, benefiting from the fast resourcing and flexibility it provides,” said Charles Zedlewski, vice president of Products at Cloudera. “To further support our customers, Cloudera Director 2.0 makes it easier and more cost-effective for customers to tap into these benefits, while reliably managing cloud deployments both at scale and in production.”

 According to the Director announcement:

For all workloads, there are customizable templates and configurations to easily manage and repeat deployments. Cloudera provides an aggregated view of all clusters, across all environments, down to the instance-level for metadata filtering, transparent monitoring, and improved troubleshooting.

“Recent ESG research shows that the number one spending priority amongst those responsible for their companies' strategic big data investments is leveraging cloud-based analytics offerings,” said Nik Rouda, senior analyst at ESG. “Cloudera Director 2.0 is very well aligned to this imperative, enabling businesses to manage Hadoop deployments across both cloud and on-premises environments, providing a robust and mature solution.”

Director is available as a free download for use with CDH and Cloudera Enterprise.
