Datamation has an interesting collection out called 49 Hot New Open Source Applications. The applications are organized into categories such as Appliances, Desktop Tools, and Developer Tools. There are quite a few interesting finds on the list, which is focused primarily on applications that arrived in the last couple of years. Here are a few of the interesting tools that I spotted, and a few new ones we've found that didn't make the list.
Datamation singles out Appetizer, which is an application launcher, or dock, for Windows. It's customizable, and supports plug-ins. Have you heard of eLibrary? I hadn't, but it looks to be useful for organizing and tagging your eBook collection.
My favorite pick from the Datamation collection, though, is WinPenPack. It's similar to the PortableApps collection of open source applications that you can download to a USB Flash drive, which I wrote about here. WinPenPack gives you various flavors of downloads that will put categorized applications on your drive or USB stick. For example, you can download School or Web collections.
Among new applications that we've recently found at OStatic, check out Lisa's recent post on how to browse anonymously on your Android phone, via Tor. This is getting some attention. Also check out her item today on After the Deadline going open source. It's the language checking software that is built into the WordPress blogging platform.Â
