Double Your Computing Capacity and Lower Your Carbon Footprint for Earth Day

Were you one of those people who turned the lights out and the power off for Earth Hour last month? Did you experience an excruciating sixty minutes of email/identi.ca/Facebook withdrawal? Userful has some good news (and a reward for your efforts) -- from now until Earth Day (April 22nd), it is giving away two-user licenses for its Userful Multiplier software.

So this time around, instead of turning the computer off, you can get the most out of its power consumption by sharing it with another user. While the Userful Multiplier software runs only on Linux, Userful is offering liveCDs bundled with the Multiplier software as part of this promotion, so those running other platforms can share the experience without making system changes.

Userful is shooting for 10,000 downloads by Earth Day. The two-user version of the software requires a computer with two graphics cards (or a dual-head card), two monitors, and two sets of USB mice and keyboards. Though the desktop hardware is shared, each user gets a completely independent computing experience.

While this obviously cuts back on power consumption, I can speak from experience that this software (thanks in no small part to its Linux roots) runs quite well on not-so-new hardware (so long as it has enough USB ports and can handle a second/dual head video card). This makes the most of the power you use, and squeezes a longer lifespan out of your hardware.

Even if this isn't something you'd use every day, it's a nifty little arrangement should you have children working on projects that need the computer simultaneously, or frequent house guests who need "just a minute" (that invariably turn into hours) to check their email.

Much has been discussed about Identity Theft, user ID's and Passwords stolen or hacked, credit cards being used without the owners knowledge and so on. Now there is a safe way of protecting your passwords and identity online from being copied, stolen and hacked by keyboard trojans, using your biometric fingerprint and face recognition, and even voice, to log on to web sites. By simply scanning your finger or face or voice you can log on to a web site, log on to your computer, and even encrypt files and folders. No more worrying about who might hack into your online accounts or even your email. No more remembering passwords or using the same passwords on many sites. This is an exciting new innovation from myBiodentity and they have about fourteen products that are enabled with biometrics including email encryption, password manager, virtual disk, and many more.
