FashionYourFirefox: Mozilla's (Partial) Effort to Push Extensions

by Sam Dean - Nov. 18, 2008Comments (7)

In an effort to coax more users to take advantage of the many extensions for its Firefox browser, Mozilla has just launched FashionYourFirefox.com. The site is divided up into categories, which cater to individual interests and "online lifestyles," according to Mozilla's announcement. The site looks like a good idea for extension novices, but I don't see some of my favorite extensions, and some of the categories have a pretty sparse number of extensions.

According to Mozilla's announcement there have now been more than one billion downloads of Firefox extensions. Undoubtedly, the extensions and the flexibility they add are what make Firefox the browser of choice.

"At Foxmarks we improve the online experience for consumers by keeping bookmarks in sync and accessible across multiple computers, anytime, anywhere. Fashion Your Firefox helps us connect with Firefox users in a personalized way," said James Joaquin, CEO, Foxmarks. Foxmarks is one of the better Firefox extensions, but what about iMacros, which we provided a visual tour of here? I consider iMacros the best Firefox extension of all.

There are many other excellent extensions not found in the current categories at FashionYourFirefox, such as BlueOrganizer. FashionYourFirefox looks like a simple way for those unfamiliar with extensions to get going with some good ones, but I still recommend the many extensions we've compiled in our Superguide.

Thanks for posting this Sam!! It's a very exciting initiative and we hope that it will provide users a consistent way to get into add-ons.

One note, BlueOrganizer was renamed to Glue by AdaptiveBlue and it is in fact in Fashion Your Fox under the "Executive Assistant" category.

Hi Sam - Rey beat me to the punch! BlueOrganizer has recently been rebranded as Glue and is in fact included in the Fashion Your Firefox initiative.

In addition to having a new name, Glue has a few new features and a simpler user interface. The changes have been positively received and I'd love to hear what you think too!

Fashion Your Firefox is another innovation by Mozilla and yet again shows their commitment to the add-on ecosystem. It's our opinion that the bundling experience will help new users discover the best add-ons that are available. We're honored to be part of this initiative!

@Rey and Fraser, thanks for the update on Glue and BlueOrganizer. Good to see that it's in there.

"Pimp my Firefox!". It's only a matter of time before we see "Firefox Cribs", for people who have rocked out themes!

Glue is interesting, but I think it fits better in the "Social Butterfly" category.

iMacros should definitely be in the "Executive Assistant" category, because that is just what it is - A great time-saver once you set up your first few macros.

FashionYourFirefox itself is a great concept, I enjoyed browsing the different categories. Now... back to work :)

Hey Sam,

Alex from AdaptiveBlue is here. Was trying to reach you earlier about Glue. Want to setup time for a quick demo? I think you'd really enjoy the evolutionary angle of retooling for the earlier adopter market.

I am at alex dot iskold @ gmail.

FashionYourFirefox is a good idea, what about creating a similar site aimed at businesses? It could show them how to save time and money using Firefox and its addons. Tools like the Greasemonkey, iMacros, Foxmarks, Read it later, PDF download,..., are used in many companies as well! Maybe even add some case studies.
