Forget special sale prices on calculators and dorm room furniture, Fedora has the ultimate back-to-school offer -- a scholarship program for college-bound students who contribute to free software and the Fedora Project.
Under the new program, one high school senior will be selected each year to receive $2,000 USD for each of the four years he or she attends a college or university as a full-time student. The lucky winner will also receive travel and lodging money to attend the nearest Fedora Users and Developers Conference (FUDCon).
This year's scholarship has been awarded to 18-year old Ricky Zhou, who plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science in the fall. Zhou has been using open source software since elementary school and got involved with the Fedora Project by working on the Fedora 7 Web site.
The application window for next year's scholarship money opens on September 1, 2008 and the winner is expected to be announced in May of next year.
