First openSUSE 11.3 Milestone Released

The openSUSE Project has released the first milestone for the upcoming 11.3 release due in July. The new release comes with updates for GNOME, KDE, and a new desktop choice: LXDE.

The first milestone is very early in the development cycle, but gives a good look for developers at what's coming in 11.3. KDE 4.4 includes improvements in the Nepomuk Search framework, the ability to share Plasma widgets, and this release comes with a technology preview of the Netbook shell for KDE.

LXDE is making its first official appearance in openSUSE with 11.3. The LXDE desktop is for users who want a very lightweight environment that requires little RAM or processing power. A new mailing list and other community tools have been set up to support LXDE development on openSUSE, see the openSUSE wiki for more.

The GNOME 2.29.5 release, leading to 2.30, is in 11.3m1 as well and includes improvements in Empathy (Instant Messenger), Epiphany (browser) and the GNOME Keyring for authentication data.

For a more complete look at the 11.3 details, see the release announcement on openSUSE News, and the Factory News page for detailed changes between 11.2 final and 11.3m1.

Downloads are available at software.opensuse.org. The next release is expected by February 11th.
