Five Password Management Add-Ons For Firefox

Firefox

Firefox is a wonderful browser in so many ways but its password management leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, there are several add-ons to help manage your passwords and easily generate new ones in a flash.

Show My Password - If you're tired of having your password field scrambled even though no one else is around to peek over your shoulder, then try this add-on. It shows your passwords as you type them, making typos easier to catch before they slow down your logins.

pwgen - This password generator puts an icon on your status bar so you can generate strong passwords with one click. Passwords are automatically displayed and copied onto the clipboard so you can paste them into a secure file for future reference.

Master Password Timeout - One of the handiest things about Firefox's native password managers is also one of its biggest weaknesses: It's possible to display stored passwords via Preferences but you must remember to hide them again when you're done. This add-on relocks the passwords after a specified period of time (the defualt is 5 seconds) and requires a master password to get back in.

Mass Password Reset - As the name suggests, this add-on helps you search and locate passwords by domain or user name, then assign a new passwords to the entire batch of results. This is an especially handy tool for anyone who uses the same password across multiple Web sites.

Password Exporter - Use this add-on to export saved passwords stored in Firefox's native password manager. Login information is exported as an XML or CSV file and can be easily imported into another browser or application.

I work at Xmarks.com - we're best known for synchronizing bookmarks across computers but we also manage passwords; our Firefox add-on offers secure password sync - keeps all your computers in sync with the same set of Firefox stored passwords.

Hey it’s a great list. Another one that I would like to include is Billeo. It securely saves passwords and allows you to access, edit or delete them anytime. The tool is VeriSign secured and also compatible with the new Firefox 3.5.

Hi James -- I'm a *huge* Xmarks fan dating back to the earliest days of Foxmarks. The only reason I didn't include it is because I was trying to stick to single purpose add-ons. But, yep, Xmarks has a superior password management system that's saved my bacon more than once. :-)

I would HIGHLY recommend sticking with something like KeyPass (FOSS) - it creates a local copy and is MUCH more secure than going with one of these browser extensions..

Good post. I think LastPass is the best option out there. 2 factor authentication, plugins for all browsers, etc. Posted a review on my blog: http://effective-life.com/2010/06/09/the-last-password-you-need-to-remem...

Another great way to manage your online accounts, passwords, etc. is myhomepage.com. By using myhomepage.com, you can store your favourite websites and access them from any computer. In addition, myhomepage.com securely stores all your login-in information. Simply click on a web-page screen shot, which you customize into your own personal homepage, and myhomepage.com does the rest. Its safer than using firefox to store your passwords, very easy to use, and free of charge; I highly recommend it.

I love password exporter since it allows you to use the standard CSV File Format I can use to get my data in any spreadsheet processor.

I just wanted to let you know that I have found a new password manager calle Paranoia Password Manager for firefox which is still in Beta version but for me it is excellent because it is based on a private server not cloud storage. You can find it here:
