FOSS Developers: oDesk Online Staffing Marketplace Has Launched "Groups"

by Sam Dean - May. 13, 2009Comments (0)

Many people with technical skills, including many open source developrs, use online staffing marketplace oDesk to find work on projects. Project leaders, too, use the service as a way to find developers from all around the world with targeted types of skills. Today, oDesk is launching a program called oDesk Groups, with 11 companies as initial launch partners, including Sun Microsystems, Zend, Yahoo! and Network Solutions. Among other things, Groups are targeted to allow these large tech companies to find developers and people with other types of skills who can work on their products and services. The initial partners have substantial budgets for development, and open source-focused partners Sun Microsystems and Zend may use oDesk Groups to make work available for many open source developers and experts.

According to the oDesk Groups announcement:

"For partners, including Sun Microsystems, Yahoo!, and Network Solutions - a group gives each company two major benefits – they get the infrastructure necessary to power a marketplace for their users and they can market to the thriving oDesk network of more than 250,000 service providers and 60,000 employers. By partnering with oDesk companies can quickly implement a team of experts to support and fulfill their products and services."

Among the initial groups formed, open source developers may be interested in these:

- Sun, for experts in Java Development and Solaris System Administration.

- Joomla!, for specialists in custom development and design on the CMS system.

- Zend, for PHP developers that have achieved the Zend Certified Engineer status.

- Yahoo!, will be launching an oDesk Group shortly for web developers to support Yahoo! Small Business customers.

- Additional launch partners can be seen in the Groups Directory, and include Drupal, PBwiki, ClickTale, and ooVoo.
