The 451 Group is well-known for its close tracking of venture capital deployments focused on commercial open source companies. On Thursday, May 14th--this week--researchers at The 451 Group are hosting a free webinar from 12:00pm EDT to 1:00pm EDT, focused on the history of venture funding in open source firms between 1997 and 2008. The analysis will focus on trends spanning more than 370 funding deals.

According to The 451 Group's Matt Aslett, the webinar is titled Open to Investment and will cover the following topics:

Details of funding to date and historical trends

Details on the 57 vendors most likely to be considering further funding

The impact of current global financial conditions on open source

Investor sentiment towards open source business strategies

Drivers for investment in open source

The perceived risks of investment in open source

The outlook for venture funding in 2009

Details of potential IPOs (once the market improves)

M&A opportunities and drivers

We've seen some significant venture funding for open source firms so far this year, and one of the biggest acquisitions of an open source company in Oracle's purchase of Sun Microsystems. The 451 Group's webinar will include results from a survey of private investors focused on possible venture investments in open source going forward, and sounds worth tuning into.
