The community behind Linux Mint announced this week Linux Mint 8, codenamed "Helena," is now available for download. It's based on Ubuntu 9.10, ships with the GNOME 2.28 desktop, and Xorg 7.4. Linux Mint 8 sports several new updates and improvements, a brand new Upload Manager, and lots of cool things under the hood.

Linux Mint 8 is also available in a Universal Edition, a customized version of the Main Edition with a few important key differences. The Universal Edition comes as a live DVD instead of a live CD, and has built-in support for more than 30 languages. There are no codecs or support for restricted formats, nor are there any included proprietary components.

Additional improvements include:

* Configureable and customizable places
* Support for OEM installs
* A customizable update manager
* An enhanced GUI
* An improved software manager

I can't get my sisters camera to work in Linux Mint. When I plug it in, it asks me if I want to import photos and I choose yes, but nothing happens. I believe the camera is a Nikon Coolpix L12. The camera works fine in Ubuntu, which is weird because Linux Mint is completely based on Ubuntu. Any ideas?
