The GNOME and KDE projects recently decided that their upcoming developer events -- GUADEC and Akademy, respectively -- will be held simultaneously in the same location. Both projects hope this will foster communication and collaboration between their developer pools, and ultimately strengthen open source desktops.
The joint event, the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit 2009, will be held July 3-11, 2009, in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), and will be hosted by Cabildo, Gran Canaria's local government.
Akademy and GUADEC will have separate functions and meetings, but the close proximity of the events (held in adjacent venues) is intended to facilitate inter-project communication.
Gran Canaria itself was chosen for the island's relatively "centralized" location in Europe, and proximity to Africa and the Americas.
For those in North and South America (or unable to make the Gran Canaria Summit dates), there are developer events and hackfests for both desktops at other times in other locations. GNOME Live! is generally held in autumn, in the Boston, Massachusetts area. KDE has recently announced the first Camp KDE event, taking place this January in Negril, Jamaica.
