Jaspersoft and Hyperic Beef Up Open Source Business Intelligence

Open source business intelligence (BI) company Jaspersoft and application performance monitoring software vendor Hyperic announced today a deepening of their ongoing relationship. JasperServer Professional Edition will be embedded in the new Hyperic Operations IQ to give IT teams an in-depth look at metrics and service levels.

Before dismissing the news as just another corporate partnership, consider that these kinds of match-ups are the very thing software vendors are likely to begin offering as companies get more serious about monitoring the bottom line.

ServerWatch's Amy Newman explains the relationship between both technologies. "IQ is meant to be plug and play. It ships with built-in reports that are ready to go after installation, as well as a custom report builder with a drag-and-drop interface...Jaspersoft's Business Intelligence software is the underpinnings of Hyperic Operations IQ

."

The two companies originally got together in 2007 when Hyperic used the Community Edition of Jaspersoft’s JasperReports to deliver integrated reporting capabilities. The new functionality in the Professional edition adds "advanced reporting and analysis infrastructure" and lets users customize components of the platform as needed.

Interest in open source BI tools have been gaining ground in recent years as customers worry about vendor lock-in. "[R]ecent consolidation in the business intelligence market has fuelled concerns for customers about their business intelligence and reporting application roadmap; this leads them to seek a platform-independent future. Open source business intelligence offers a suitable information application alternative, which is vendor, platform, and ERP system independent," writes Developer.com's Nobby Akiha.

I can write a Nagios adapter to get at any kind of data, I believe. And they are 100% FOSS. I guess Hyperic has a free version too, and is easier on the eyes, but Nagios doesn't have the money so they rely on the community for plugin support..
