As OStatic's own Sam Dean puts it, "Business Intelligence (BI) applications are used to better understand historical, current and future aspects of business operations." Open source BI company Jaspersoft released two new editions of its Java reporting tool JasperReports Pro today that include a whole slew of new features and upgrades, so if you've been considering giving business intelligence software a try, now might be a good time to start.

New features in JasperReports Professional include:

· Powerful 100% Java reporting engine for embedded environments
· A graphical report designer to simplify and empower report development
· Rapid interactive chart design with hundreds of supplied Flash charts, graphs, and widgets
· Geo-visualization with drill down capability with Flash maps
· Multiple data source and report output support

JasperReports Pro comes packaged two ways. The Developer Edition includes "everything you need to ease the development of next generation reports and web applications." It includes hundreds of maps and charts, a reporting engine, a graphical report designer, and access to JasperSoft forums and documentation. The Runtime Edition gives report and application access to an unlimited number of users and also includes access phone-based tech support and the JasperSoft Support Portal. Pricing ranges from $249 to $4,600, depending on your company's needs.

Forbes' Dan Woods asserted recently that business intelligence is clenched in the jaws of death and "operational intelligence" is poised to take over. "Operational intelligence analysis is based on data collected as it flows through the network or as it appears from its source, before finding its way to a data warehouse, " he writes. "[It] will monitor and combine data from hundreds of feeds from data warehouses as well as XML-based information from Web services, video, geo-spatial data and streaming sources."

JasperSoft CEO Brian Gentile isn't quite so fatalisitc but does acknowledge change is inevitable. He says the next generation of Web apps -- BI software included -- will require "ubiquitous access" and "elegant presentation, be "all about customization, and "embrace collaboration." To get a sense of where Gentile thinks BI is going and where JasperSoft's products fit in, be sure to check out the informative series of posts on his blog.

Other options to consider include Actuate and Pentaho. Would be interesting to see a bake off of all three...
