Mirantis and Others Steer Big Growth in OpenStack Cloud Training

by Ostatic Staff - Jan. 19, 2016

Mirantis, focused on the OpenStack cloud computing platform and ecosystem, expanded its OpenStack training efforts in big ways in 2015. According to the company, that included adding new courses, expanding to 15 new locations and training more than 5,000 students, doubling the total number of students the company has trained since 2012.

In fact, in our regular roundups of OpenStack certification and training programs, Mirantis has figured prominently. Overall training for OpenStack surged in 2015. According to the OpenStack Foundation, since the launch of the OpenStack marketplace in September 2013, training offerings grew from 17 unique courses in eight cities to 119 courses in 99 cities.

"Training is often a leading indicator to a technology's impact. In 2015 OpenStack advanced beyond early adopters, and we saw an uptick in individuals and businesses scrambling to develop OpenStack skills," said Mirantis Head of OpenStack Training Services, Lee Xie. "Students choose Mirantis Training because our courses cover vanilla OpenStack, equipping them with true technical understanding of what it's like to deploy and operate OpenStack in the real world."

Mirantis claims that its training is vendor-agnostic, and the company teaches OpenStack across the most popular distributions, hypervisors, storage backends, and network topologies. The company offers OpenStack Fundamentals (OS50), a one-day course for business professionals, OpenStack Bootcamp I (OS100), training IT professionals to operate, configure, and administer an OpenStack environment, and OpenStack Bootcamp II (OS200), which is training on the manual deployment of OpenStack. Earlier this year, Mirantis launched Virtual Training, a synchronized, instructor-led online OpenStack professional training option.

The company says it also added two new courses in 2015, including:

- OpenStack Accelerated Bootcamp with Exam (OS250), which combines Mirantis' two OpenStack operation and deployment Bootcamps into one 5-day course.

- OpenStack Fuel Administration (FUEL100), a specialized 2-day course that covers OpenStack projects Fuel, Murano, and Sahara.

Meanwhile, as part of its efforts to grow the OpenStack talent pool and global community, the OpenStack Foundation has announced a new professional certification program that is meant to provide a baseline assessment of knowledge and be accessible to OpenStack professionals around the world.

The Certified OpenStack Administrator is a professional typically with at least six months OpenStack experience and has the skills required to provide day-to-day operation and management of an OpenStack cloud, according to the Foundation. There is more at the website: http://openstack.org/coa
