Miro Media Player Out in Version 2.0

We've covered the open source media player Miro before. It's well-liked for its facility with web videocasts, BitTorrent files, and ability to handle nearly any type of video file, including full-screen high-definition video. You can also deliver video and audio to Miro's player as a publisher. Now, Miro is out in a new version 2.0 for Windows and the Mac, featuring a new interface, better user feedback, and faster performance.

Miro 2.0 is a relatively quick download, and once it's installed, you can start watching videos from around the web, including downloading YouTube video, subscribing to video RSS feeds, or you can check Miroguide for content you may be interested in. The video content at MiroGuide is divided up into categories ranging from Kids, to Music, to News, to Food or President Obama's weekly addresses. Upon installation, Miro asks if you want it to search for content you already have on your computer or not. LegalTorrents is included as one of the default sites you can access content from, and it collects torrent files that won't land you in copyright trouble.

Miro 2.0's performance is definitely snappier than it was in previous versions, although I noted that it does take a long time to load compared to other media players. The interface is updated to give you more feedback about processes in progress, especially along the left rail of the application, as seen below. You can see downloads going on, for example, and if you try to shut the player down before your content is downloaded, you'll get a warning prompt.

Miro differs from many other media players in that it links users up with social channels and ways to share video content. It's also good to get to know if you are a video publisher, because you can offer subscriptions by RSS feed to your videocasts. Check it out.
