Devuan Beta, Stumbling Tumbleweed, Ubuntu Too
Today in Linux news Debian-fork Devuan is forging ahead with its plans to create a distribution offering init freedom by releasing a beta for testers. Douglas DeMaio posted today that openSUSE Tumbleweed snapshots have halted due to glibc upgrade rebuilds. Dedoimedo reviewed the BQ Aquaris M10 and liliputing.com posted of another Ubuntu laptop for sale. And finally, the Hectic Geek reviewed Ubuntu 16.04 and Neil Rickert reviewed Kubuntu 16.04.
"dear Init Freedom Lovers," the post began today from the Devuan Project announcing a release of their fork of Debian without systemd. The project was announced two years ago causing a bit of a discussion at the time. Conceding the inaugural release took longer than expected, a year overdue, the announcement declared "Devuan is here to stay." Debian Wheezy and Jessie users can upgrade or switch painlessly according to the announcement and installers are available for fresh installs. Versions of Devuan Jessie 1.0 Beta are available in 32 and 64 bit as well as ARM. Testers and their reports are requested and donations are gratefully accepted.
openSUSE Tumbleweed hasn't seen a snapshot in a week or so until today due to upgrading glibc to 2.23 and libvirt to 1.3.3. DeMaio said the entire rolling distribution had to be rebuilt and then tested by QA. He added, "The libraries provide new compatibility and remove some obsolete functions. Several patches were removed from glibc and libvirt." Qt 5.6 is upcoming likely to land after the next YaST sprint.
Ubuntu made a few headlines today as usual. Dedoimedo reviewed the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu tablet and said the software still needs lots of work. With Tumbleweed on hiatus this week, Neil Rickert tested Kubuntu 16.04 saying, "For the most part, this is a pretty good implementation of Plasma 5." Blogger Hectic Geek said of Ubuntu 16.04 in his review, "For its superior stability & performance, I definitely recommend it over its predecessors." And finally, liliputing.com reported today on a new Ubuntu Laptop: the Entroware Orion.
