As the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco winds down, it's worth looking in at the news out of the get-together. Lots of pundits were on hand, and the conference brought several new announcements.

Acquia representatives at OSBC said they are on track to deliver a value-added social publishing system named Carbon based on the Drupal open source content management system (OStatic is built on Drupal). The company is also working on Acquia Projects, which will allow Drupal community members to collaborate with Acquia's applications.

Meanwhile, open source business intelligence software provider Jaspersoft announced that it is working with Microsoft on a series of initiatives to optimize the JasperSoft Business Intelligence Suite for Windows Server 2008 and other Microsoft technologies. The company also announced that a new JasperSoft ODBO Connect product is available now. It enables Excel to be used as a front-end for the JasperAnalysis data analysis server.

“More than 50 percent of open source applications deployed in the enterprise are running on Windows systems,” said Sam Ramji, senior director of platform technology strategy at Microsoft, in conjunction with the Jaspersoft announcement.

In other news this week, open source developers Colosa and Knowledge Tree announced a mashup of their web-based document management applications ProcessMaker and KnowledgeTree. The deal involves combining ProcessMaker Open Source 1.0 with KnowledgeTree version 3.5.2 in a plug-in installable for both Linux and Windows. The plug-in is installable now. Businesses can use it to streamline forms production, workflows, reporting and more.

Some of the more interesting discussions at OSBC came in a series of roundtables featuring open source pundits. Bruce Perens, creator of the Open Source Definition, weighed in on open source and patents. Zack Urlocker, vice president of products at MySQL, said that open source applications and operating systems must be easier to use. All of the roundtable discussions have excerpts online. Check in for some provocative viewpoints.
