After a bit of a delay, openSUSE 12.1 RC 1 has been released. Jos Poortvliet blogged, "The next release of openSUSE is expected to bring a large number of improvements and changes. But we also have some really unique treats."
According to the newly setup 12.1 Portal, openSUSE 12.1 will feature GNOME 3.2.1, KDE 4.7.1, and minor updates to Xfce and LXDE. The Top Features says GNOME 3.2 will bring lots of improvements to the GNOME 3 desktop. Some include "better handling of smaller screens and multi-screen setups, better notifications and a centralized online accounts configuration. This release also brings you a new Document manager, quick preview in the Nautilus filemanager, enhanced color management and automatic rotation for touch screen devices." It also states that openSUSE 12.1 will be the "first to ship the Calligra Suite and Firefox 7.0."
One of the features Poortvliet mentions by name is Snapper. "Snapper builds on the new Linux filesystem BTRFS and offers powerful filesystem snapshot- and rollback functionality with accompanying command line and graphical tools. These tools keep an eye on what is changing in your system." You can then "roll back" any changes to any previous state. systemd is still planned for this release as well.
RC 1 is scheduled for October 21 and RC 2 is planned for November 3. Final is due to be released to the public on November 16.
