OSCON Gets Rolling in Oregon

OSCON, the huge annual open source convention run by O'Reilly opens today in Portland, Oregon and continues through the end of the week. OStatic will provide updates throughout the week, and we've been pre-briefed on several interesting announcements. This year's conference includes a number of high-profile speakers, including Google's Chris DiBona and Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth. Roberto Galoppini has posted a good guide to the key events at the conference, and you can find more here and in the rest of this story.

Today, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation will discuss “The State of Mobile Linux” at OSCON.  Mark Shuttleworth from Canonical will also be talking about Ubuntu and Space Travel today. That's likely to raise a few eyebrows. Ubuntu and other open source offerings are widely used by NASA.

Chris DiBona and Leslie Hawthorn from Google will be talking about Google and open source at 4:30 PST on Wednesday.  There is also a session planned called "Does Open Source Need to be Organic?" That session will be keying off of this well-known post on organic vs. non-organic open source efforts. You'll find lots of open source news from the conference here at OStatic this week.
