Is Wikia considered to be the 'parent' of Wikipedia? That sounds misleading. I think it simply shares the founding team and software, perhaps, but there is no organizational link, right?

Technically, Wikia is a hosting service for wikis and Wikipedia is a wiki. Both were founded by Jimmy Wales, who has disputed claims in the press that Wikia is the commercial arm of non-profit Wikipedia. So there's an unusual link between the two entities, but "parent" is an easy way to think about it, from my perspective at least.
