Corporates getting in to OSS is definitely a growing trend. However, this also leads to improved quality of code until the community truly picks up the project. While there have been a ton of cool projects that have been developed in a pure OSS model, having a company behind them is really not that bad. SugarCRM, Zimbra, Autommatic, Alfresco, etc. are all examples of a model that can work. Eclipse, for example, is also an example of code worked on by IBM.
