OStatic Interviews Cisco Developer Contest Finalists: Team RSDevs

While the ten hopeful finalists in the Cisco "Think Inside the Box" developer competition await the judges' decision, OStatic has been fortunate enough to speak with a few teams about their submissions. The global contest centered on the "network as a platform" approach to develop applications using Cisco's Linux-based AXP (Application Extension Platform), a service module on its ISR (Integrated Services Routers).

Today, Roman Skvirsky of Team RSDevs has graciously taken the time to tell OStatic readers a little bit more about his Flash Gateway to Videoconferences application. The Flash Gateway to Videoconferences allows users to connect and join conferences and audio calls to H.323 and SIP phones through a web browser -- requiring no additional software installation beyond the Flash plugin.

OStatic: RSDevs was created, according to the brief summary on Cisco's site, in order to more closely concentrate on developing and innovating in the audio and video communications/teleconferencing areas. What drew you to those types of projects in particular?

Skvirsky: I realized the great perspectives of audio and videoconferencing in 2000 when it was not so widespread. People always want to communicate with each other and I see my mission to give people the opportunity to communicate in an easy and comfortable way.

OStatic: The Cisco Dev Contest asked participants to create projects using the AXP platform, implementing any necessary features of the platform, open source libraries -- and ultimately produce an application that's extensible, documented -- and useful. There are a lot of potential projects in the realm of teleconferencing that would be good candidates. How did you ultimately decide on proceeding with the Flash Gateway to Videoconferences project?

Skvirsky: Nowadays video communications plays a great role. Customers are waiting for an easy and flexible tool to participate in videoconferences. We selected "Flash Gateway to Videoconferences" because it is a perfect response for existing market demand. With "Flash Gateway to Videoconferences" people can join videoconferences and get access to video content from any web browser-enabled device such as a PC, laptop, netbook, PDA, iPhone, Symbian-based and others.

"Flash Gateway to Videoconferences" can be used by everybody. It is oriented on all internet users. Our solution can change the world - that's why we selected it.

OStatic: What feature/function of the Flash Gateway to Videoconferences are people most enthusiastic about when you explain the application?

Skvirsky: We consider that "Flash Gateway to Videoconferences" has two most exciting features:

a) it works nearly everywhere! (if there is a browser)

b) calls can be placed just with a single click – no need to make configuration or installation.

OStatic: Has work on the Flash Gateway to Videoconferences inspired the team to innovate in new ways/previously unimagined directions? How do you think that the teleconferencing application landscape is changing, and how do you see RSDevs shaping that landscape?

Skvirsky: Yes, we are going to release another teleconferencing product for the AXP platform in a few weeks. AXP is an interesting platform so we are going to develop products for it. Besides now we are extending our product "Flash Gateway to Videoconferences" with "Video-on-Demand" features for PC and mobile devices like PDAs and smartphones.

The world of telecommunications is changing rapidly. New technologies emerge continuously. We already changed the teleconferencing landscape in 2006 when we were the first who released Skype Audio Gateway. We also were the first in 2008 when we released Skype Video Gateway. We keep on delivering innovative and high-tech products using our large experience in telecommunications.

We at OStatic would like to thank Mr. Skvirsky for taking a moment to talk more about the RSDevs' entry in the Cisco Developer Contest, and wish him the best of luck when the winning teams are announced in early October.
