Packt Publishing Announces Nominees for 2009 CMS Awards

Technology book publisher Packt Publishing announced the finalists this week for its 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. Winners and runners-up from each of the five categories will win from $500 - $4,000 and take home a share of prize money totaling $24,000. Six 8 GB iPods will also be awarded at random to individuals who have visited Packt's Web site to nominate their favorite projects.

This year's nominees are:

Best Overall Open Source CMS Award

  • Wordpress
  • XOOPS

Most Promising CMS
  • Manhali
  • ImpressCMS 
  • Pligg
  • Pixie
  • Redaxscript

Best Open Source PHP CMS
  • Drupal
  • Joomla!
  • MODx
  • TypoLight
  • Wordpress

Best Other Open Source CMS
  • DotNetNuke
  • dotCMS
  • Mojo Portal
  • Plone
  • WebGUI

Winning nominations were chosen from a pool of over 12,000 submissions. Voting ends on October 30, 2009 and the finalists that make it to the next round will be announced on November 9, 2009. Winners will ultimately be chosen by a select panel of judges who will assess each project based on, "performance, usability, accessibility, ease of configuration and customization, scalability and security."

 Packt has also included a new category this year, Hall of Fame, designed to keep the same popular projects from winning every year. Joomla! and Drupal will compete against each other for the title this year and the winner of this year's Overall Award winner will join next year's Hall of Fame competition.
